Ioannis Canellos / About me

I am Ioannis, father, software engineer, recreational athlete, but chances are you are here for my professional capacity, so here goes:

I build developer tools, technologies and workflows that make software engineering fun. I believe simplicity beats sophistication and that’s not just a preference, it’s history repeating itself over and over again.

I have over 21 years of experience in the field, 15 of which as a full time open source developer. I’m a member of the Apache Software Foundation, contributing to numerous projects as a committer and PMC member. Currently, I’m Head of Software Engineering at Cyber Ranges (2025 – present). Before that, I spent over a decade at Red Hat (2012 – 2025), most recently as Senior Principal Software Engineer on the Quarkus team, working on cloud native integrations with Kubernetes and OpenShift.

Along the way I’ve created Spring Cloud Kubernetes, Fabric8 Kubernetes Client, Dekorate, Sundrio and Apache Karaf Cellar.

I enjoy writing and speaking about the same things I love building, whatever gets me professionally excited at the time.

When I’m not coding, you’ll find me on the mats training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I love that it combines the mental with the physical and that your personality goes into your game, making it as unique as a fingerprint. It’s an ever changing sport so vast that no two people play it the same way.
